The objective is to provide a means to describe the company and the products or services that is dealt with. There is also a description of how to contact the company - using traditional means. this allows your existing sales team to maximise sales and service while minimising costs associated wit the web site

Example: Macsound (see right). Notice there is no reason to feel that you should loose any aspect of the 'style' of your business just because you are not spending a fortune. In this example the company used PDF files as the bulk of the information, your own staff write the necessary informational materials (including price lists) and just print them to PDF and push the file up to the site - job done.

This site provides an internet link to your traditional communications via an email address that can appear on every page of the web site, but by using print style materials the new custoemr is more likely to ring initiaiating a sales procedure that you already deal with.

This uses the mechanisms that people are familiar with and provides the most cost effective way of 'getting on the web'.

Enough such that a customer can sort through the various items and select exactly what they want. Remember, there is no sales team to assist the customer in their selection, the web site pages have to perform every function your sales team would normally perform.

There will need to be as many images as it takes to accurately describe the product range.

A more web-form, or a number of forms, may be required. The customer prints the form then either mails it or faxes it to your business. This allows your existing sales team to follow up (maybe sells something extra) dealing with specific details or avoiding problems if, for example, the stock was currently unavailable. Alternatively, the web-form is sent via the internet to your sales team - a followup then allows two process steps to occur: (1) confirm selection, maybe up the sale, (2) confirm the actual sale and eliminate spam, or fraudulant attempts.

Again, remember there is no sales team to assist the customer in their selection, the web site pages have to perform every function your sales team performs as the prurchase happens immediately - any mistakes means Returned Items and Refunds. Just a word to the wise: don't discount on your launch of the web site, find out about teething problems over a number of months - it is like the setting up of any business, there WILL be the odd problem at first.

There will need to be as many images as it takes to accurately describe the product range - especially important now. Those images need to accurately reflect the products, make sure red is red and not maroon, is it navy blue or black.

Complex forms, or a number of forms, will be required at the Order Entry stage. The customer may not purchase until they have ordered, searched some more, added to existing order, looked at other things, add to order again - flexibility is required. This process can be handled by a shopping cart system - but not all shopping cart systems are the same. Then once the order is completed (copies sent to every one) the credit card purchase occurs - you will need an internet enabled Merchant Facility with your bank OR you can use a simpler (but often more expensive alternative (eg: PayPal or even eBay)

At your business you will need to implement processes by which every internet sales gets the same attention as your current physical sales. Maybe even more, as some businesses deal in areas where genuine mistakes can be made by the customer when selecting, so a rapid personal vetting might be in order.
