For Web Hosting you are renting space on a computer which is directly and continuously connected to the internet. This means we manage the telecommunications, the computing hardware and software necessary for all the underlying technology. There are various levels of Web Host sophistication, the simplest level is a WebDirectory on the Web Strands server. Should you wish your own domain name, then you can select one of the Web Server options depending on the level of usage you would expect of the site. The WebVenture Server provides a cost effective way of having a presence online, while the WebBusiness and WebEnterprise Servers provide much larger units at manageable rates. All come with unlimited disk space the differences are associated with aspects like traffic rates, whether you need FrontPage facilities or even SSL and e-commerce. The most sophisticated level is the purchase of a dedicated computer and housing it at a specific location. This is the option you take to tie your Web Server directly into your current Information Technology network. It will require concentrating on the security aspects - remember it not only provides publishing outwards but also provides a line into your network. Do bare in mind, if you think that heavy usage requires your own machine, not so, the cost of having the telecommunications lines added to your location (and then under-utilised on slow days) means you are actually better to host on one of our servers where the telecommunications are scalable. A dedicated system is costed case-by-case, but realistically expect $5,000 to $10,000 in hardware and software alone. Having your own server does open up many facilities, you can run a hybrid system like the Lotus Notes document system with the Domino Web Service layer on top, or a standard web server which interfaces to a Filemaker or SQL or ODBC Database.

Co-location of servers
We can assist with the installation of your own server at the same location we use. Since this is the type of option you might choose after you have developed an extensive software/web documentation system, you should contact us directly so we can consult with you better.

Search indexes are a drain on a server, the disk activity when searching for keywords through all your files, the writing to disk of the resultant keyword index file and later when a person actually searches your site, the disk activity of the exercise all mean response to the Browser (person searching site) can, sporadically, appear to slow. As with anything on the internet, two computers work better than one . . . Basic Search Facility - Search software and resultant index file held on your server (what most people offer). Premium Search Facility - Web Strands also offer search software and resultant index managed on a separate (specialised) server. Re-indexing of site is configurable for time of day and frequency (weekly, etc) even which night (Tue or Sat) you want it to occur on. This option means absolutely no extra load is added to your server, and all results may be configured to match your site look and feel. Web DatabasesThese vary quite a bit.
