Webmaster - Project Management
. . . has been developing computing services for business since the 1980's having been involved in introducing computer controlled analysis and data storage to the chemical laboratories at Ingot Metals Ltd back in 1981, and having a similar - dramatic - influence on all the companies he was employed with during his stay at Standard Telephones and Cables, Kayes Chemical Co. (Aust). The last few years, while running Web Strands, he has also been expanding and managing Information Technology in the Materials Division of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation. This uses all his skills including Macintosh expertise, Windows/Intel support, Novell networking, relational database design and integration with a WWW intranet service.
Ross was the spark for the genesis of Web Strands, having identified that while there were a lot of people jumping on the World Wide Web (WWW or the Web) band wagon, there were few doing so at a price level that was useful to Australian Small and Medium Businesses.
His response was to set up an independent company which could deal with Business and develop tools on the internet which could be delivered within required budget constraints. Ross is like a Swiss army knife, he can everything well, but his best skill is knowing when to get someone better for a specific task.
The progression to developing a web site entails a close relationship between the Webmaster and the Client, being able to walk into a business and talk with and work alongside the business' employees is essential. For many companies this will be their first taste of the Internet as a medium for doing business consequently the aim is to add internet tools to your business so find a Webmaster who not only knows his or her stuff, but is good with handling business relationships is an essential.
Being able to supply the required skills for the Project and Budget at hand is the other necessary management skill. While most of the work is performed by Ross, he does have a pool of people which he can draw on to deliver specialist tasks like:
So should you need those skills then they are available, on call, but closely managed.
Look around the Web Strands site, you will find it a little different to other sites, it contains discussions on what to look for when selecting a Webmaster (like that which appears above), examples of the different facilities the internet offers and more importantly how to utilise them in your business.
